“PHILIP THE EVANGELIST”
(The 4th Philip)
Introduction:
- There are four “Philips” referred to in the New Testament:
- “Philip” the apostle – (Matt. 10.3; John 1.43-46)
- Two sons of Herod the Great – (Matt. 14.3; Luke 3.1)
- “Philip the evangelist” – (Acts 6, 8 & 21)
- “Philip the evangelist” is the focus of our study.
PHILIP IN JERUSALEM – Acts 6.1-5
- The need of the widows among the Hellenistic Jews resulted in selecting seven men of good reputation, including Philip.
- Learning to work in cooperation with others is crucial!
PHILIP IN SAMARIA – Acts 8.4-15
- Jesus said the gospel would spread to Samaria, which began as a result of the dispersion. (Acts 1.8; 8.1-3)
- The gospel can change the lives of disreputable people!
PHILIP IN THE GAZA DESERT – Acts 8.26-40
- Philip is instructed by an angel to go out to Gaza Desert, where he “preached Jesus” to the Ethiopian eunuch.
- Philip’s willingness to be used in whatever place God wanted is an important lesson for all of us.
PHILIP IN CAESAREA – Acts 21.8-10
- Nearly 20 years pass before Luke mentions Philip again, when he housed the apostle Paul for many days. Philip resided in Caesarea with his family, including four daughters.
- Philip not only taught strangers, but his own family!
Conclusion: Philip succeeded as an evangelist, a brother & as a father!
