PM Sermon 9/29/13: “Ezra Set His Heart”
PM Scripture Reading: Ezra 7.6-10
Brent T. Willey
“Ezra Set His Heart”
Ezra 7.6-10
Introduction:
- Ezra records the events immediately following the release of the Judeans from Babylon captivity as a result of the “decree of Cyrus” (Ezra 1.1-8; 6.3).
- Zerubbabel was instrumental in the rebuilding of the temple, Ezra was assigned the task of restoring the priesthood.
- Verse 10: “For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and teach His statutes and rules in Israel.”
- Ezra’s example is worthy of our examination and application…
EZRA WAS “SKILLED IN THE LAW OF MOSES” – V. 6
- Being “skilled in the Law” does not happen by accident.
- “Skilled” [mahiyr] means “diligent or ready,” but carries the idea of being “experienced” (Holladay). (Heb. 5.13)
- We should desire to be “skilled” in the Word of Christ! (Rom. 10.17; 1 Pet. 2.2-3; 2 Pet. 3.18)
- How did Ezra get his “skill”? The answer is in v. 10…
- “Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord…”
- So should we! (2 Tim. 2.15)
EZRA WAS READY “TO DO IT” & “TEACH” IT – V. 10
- There are two more important applications in v. 10 when it comes to God’s Word: Ezra stood ready “to do it,” and he was prepared “to teach His statutes and rules in Israel.”
- Two factors are absolutely necessary:
- Practice what you preach- “to do it.” (Matt. 23.1-3)
- Teach what you know! (2 Tim. 2.2, 24; Heb. 5.12-14)
Conclusion: With a heart like Ezra’s we can truly make a difference!
