AM Scripture Reading: Matthew 7.24-29
This Morning’s Sermon:

Some Causes of Spiritual Erosion
Introduction:
- I question the wisdom of building homes on the cliffs and hillsides along the California coastline. Most of us remember the devastation of the 2005 La Conchita landside.
- This reminds us Jesus’ powerful conclusion to His challenging Sermon on the Mount. (Matt. 7.24-27)
- Spiritual erosion is a serious problem among us…
A LACK OF APPLICATION CAUSES EROSION
- This is Jesus’ primary conclusion. (Matt. 7.24-27)
- What’s the problem?
- Some won’t even listen. (Mark 8.18)
- Some hear, but will not do. (James 1.22-25)
- Some exhibit spiritual lethargy. (2 Pet. 1.10)
WASTING TIME CAUSES EROSION
- Prolonged inactivity results in erosion. (Eph. 5.15-16)
- How is time wasted?
- Misguided & imprudent priorities. (Matt. 6.33)
- Needless procrastination. (Acts 24.25; 2 Cor. 6.2)
- Dwelling on negativity. (Phil. 4.4-8)
DISCOURAGEMENT CAUSES EROSION
- Discouragement can erode our faith. (Gal. 6.9)
- How do we prepare for discouragement?
- Realistically, expect hardships in life. (Eccl. 3.1-11)
- “Overcoming” vs. “Removal” (1 John 5.4; Rev. 2-3)
- Trust in the promises of God! (1 Pet. 5.6-7)
EVIL ASSOCIATION CAUSES EROSION
- “Bad companions ruin good character” (1 Cor. 15.33 – tev).
- What should we do with “bad companions”?
- Have the upper hand in the relationship. (2 Cor. 6.14-18)
- Do not participate in their works of darkness. (Eph. 5.11)
- Shine as lights in the world. (Phil. 2.15; cf., Matt. 5.16)
Conclusion: Spiritual erosion is often a silent killer that can pervade the thinking of even good people. We must be aware of its danger.
