AM Scripture Reading: Matthew 7.24-29

This Morning’s Sermon:

Brent T. Willey

Some Causes of Spiritual Erosion

Introduction:

  1. I question the wisdom of building homes on the cliffs and hillsides along the California coastline. Most of us remember the devastation of the 2005 La Conchita landside.
  2. This reminds us Jesus’ powerful conclusion to His challenging Sermon on the Mount. (Matt. 7.24-27)
  3. Spiritual erosion is a serious problem among us…

A LACK OF APPLICATION CAUSES EROSION

  1. This is Jesus’ primary conclusion. (Matt. 7.24-27)
  2. What’s the problem?
    1. Some won’t even listen. (Mark 8.18)
    2. Some hear, but will not do. (James 1.22-25)
    3. Some exhibit spiritual lethargy. (2 Pet. 1.10)

WASTING TIME CAUSES EROSION

  1. Prolonged inactivity results in erosion. (Eph. 5.15-16)
  2. How is time wasted?
    1. Misguided & imprudent priorities. (Matt. 6.33)
    2. Needless procrastination. (Acts 24.25; 2 Cor. 6.2)
    3. Dwelling on negativity. (Phil. 4.4-8)

DISCOURAGEMENT CAUSES EROSION

  1. Discouragement can erode our faith. (Gal. 6.9)
  2. How do we prepare for discouragement?
    1. Realistically, expect hardships in life. (Eccl. 3.1-11)
    2. “Overcoming” vs. “Removal” (1 John 5.4; Rev. 2-3)
    3. Trust in the promises of God! (1 Pet. 5.6-7)

EVIL ASSOCIATION CAUSES EROSION

  1. “Bad companions ruin good character” (1 Cor. 15.33 – tev).
  2. What should we do with “bad companions”?
    1. Have the upper hand in the relationship. (2 Cor. 6.14-18)
    2. Do not participate in their works of darkness. (Eph. 5.11)
    3. Shine as lights in the world. (Phil. 2.15; cf., Matt. 5.16)

Conclusion: Spiritual erosion is often a silent killer that can pervade the thinking of even good people. We must be aware of its danger.
