This Morning’s Sermon:

FIXING THE WRONG & DOING THE RIGHT
2 Timothy 4.2
Introduction:
- God’s “word” is our counseling manual when it comes to all the significant relationships we have in life, beginning with our relationship with God!
- Paul appealed to Timothy in 2 Tim. 4.2: “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction” (NAU).
- Let’s take a close look at Paul’s statement…
EXAMINING THE TEXT – 2 Timothy 4.2
- The Charge:“Preach the word!”
- Sola Scriptura vs. Prima Scriptura
- God’s Word alone is truth! (John 17.17; Rom. 10.13-17)
- The Timing: “In season – out of season”
- When it is favorable or not favorable!
- “There is no time like the present.” (2 Cor. 6.2)
- The Method: “Reprove, rebuke & exhort”
- Elegchō= “to convict; to find fault with” [Thayer]. (Matt. 18.15; cf., 2 Tim. 3.16)
- Epitimaō = “to censure or admonish; by implication, forbid” [Strong]. (Matt. 17.18)
- Parakaleō = “to call to one’s side; to encourage, to strengthen” [Thayer]. (Titus 1.9; Heb. 3.13)
- The Attitude: “With all patience & instruction”
- This may be the biggest challenge: patience!
- The purpose of discipline is to teach. (Heb. 12.11)
ACCEPTING THE CHALLENGE
- Identify the problem! (2 Cor. 13.5)
- Receive biblical instruction! (Gal. 4.16)
- Apply the scriptural solutions! (John 13.17)
- Be patient! (Gal. 6.9)
Conclusion: It’s not a matter of just doing what is right – we must fix what is wrong in order to do what is right!
