FIXING THE WRONG & DOING THE RIGHT

2 Timothy 4.2

Introduction:

  1. God’s “word” is our counseling manual when it comes to all the significant relationships we have in life, beginning with our relationship with God!
  2. Paul appealed to Timothy in 2 Tim. 4.2: “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction” (NAU).
  3. Let’s take a close look at Paul’s statement…

EXAMINING THE TEXT – 2 Timothy 4.2

    1. The Charge:“Preach the word!”
      1. Sola Scriptura vs. Prima Scriptura
      2. God’s Word alone is truth! (John 17.17; Rom. 10.13-17)
    2. The Timing: “In season – out of season”
      1. When it is favorable or not favorable!
      2. “There is no time like the present.” (2 Cor. 6.2)
    3. The Method: “Reprove, rebuke & exhort”
      1. Elegchō= “to convict; to find fault with” [Thayer]. (Matt. 18.15; cf., 2 Tim. 3.16)
      2. Epitimaō = “to censure or admonish; by implication, forbid” [Strong]. (Matt. 17.18)
      3. Parakaleō = “to call to one’s side; to encourage, to strengthen” [Thayer]. (Titus 1.9; Heb. 3.13)
    4. The Attitude: “With all patience & instruction”
      1. This may be the biggest challenge: patience!
      2. The purpose of discipline is to teach. (Heb. 12.11)

ACCEPTING THE CHALLENGE

    1. Identify the problem! (2 Cor. 13.5)
    2. Receive biblical instruction! (Gal. 4.16)
    3. Apply the scriptural solutions! (John 13.17)
    4. Be patient! (Gal. 6.9)

Conclusion: It’s not a matter of just doing what is right – we must fix what is wrong in order to do what is right!
