AM Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 1.17-21

This Morning’s Sermon:

Brent T. Willey

Twice Mine

Introduction:

  1. Have you ever had to buy something back that at one time was originally yours? If so, we might say the item is “twice mine.”
  2. God could very well say the same thing about those individuals who have become Christians.
  3. Created in God’s image we were born innocent, but after falling prey to sin God was willing to purchase our redemption through the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. He can say, “You are twice mine!”
  4. Let’s consider three relevant facts…

I. MADE IN GOD’S IMAGE

  1. Humanity was made in the image of God. (Gen. 1.26-27; 2.7; cf., Gen. 5.1; Acts 17.28-29; James 3.9)
  2. Humanity was given freewill, the ability to make choices. (Gen. 2.16-17; 3.1-6; cf., Deut. 30.15-20; Josh. 24.15)

II. IN NEED OF REPAIR

  1. Sadly, because of wrong choices, each of us has drifted away from God when caught up in the currents of sin. (Rom. 3.23; James 1.13-15; cf., Job 1.22; 2.10-11)
  2. Sin puts us in a state of disrepair and in Satan’s possession! (Rom. 6.23; James 1.13-15; cf., John 8.34; 1 Pet. 5.8)

III. PURCHASED BY GOD

  1. Even though God is the offended party, He loved us so much that He paid the price for our redemption – the blood of His Son. (Eph. 1.7, 13-14; 1 Pet. 1.18-19; cf., Acts 20.28)
  2. God will redeem (purchase) those who submit to His saving gospel in their faith, repentance, confession & baptism. (Rom. 1.16; John 8.24; Acts 17.30; Rom. 10.10; Acts 2.38; cf., 1 Cor. 6.9-11, 19-20)

Conclusion: We belong to God by right of creation. We can belong to Him once again through the redemption that is found in His Son, Jesus Christ. Do not delay and become “twice His.”
