AM Sermon 3/31/13: No Ordinary Day
AM Scripture Reading: Psalm 118.19-24
This Morning’s Sermon:
Brent T. Willey
No Ordinary Day
Psalm 118.24
Introduction:
- Text: “This is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it” (NKJ).
- Context: The psalm has a dual nature, but it is extremely Messianic! (Read vs. 21-24)
- The “day the Lord has made” is No Ordinary Day!
I. CELEBRATE THE DAY OF SALVATION
- “Rejoice” in the sense of “celebrating.”
- TEV: “This is the day of the Lord’s victory; let us be happy, let us celebrate!”
- LXX: “to be glad, exult, rejoice…keep a day of rejoicing”(Mounce).(Rom. 15.10)
- “The day”: “day (24 hr.), time, year…a general period of time” (Brown, Driver & Briggs).
- It refers to a time of salvation – a “day” of deliverance.
- It is an enduring day: “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever” (v. 29).
II. NO ORDINARY DAY(S), INDEED!
- The day God sent His Son into the world. (Luke 2.11; John 3.16)
- The day Christ died on the cross. (Luke 23.44-47)
- The day Christ was resurrected from the dead. (Luke 24.1-8; Matt. 27.52-53; 1 Cor. 15)
- The day Christ established His church. (Matt. 16.18; Acts 2.1, 14-16, 41, 47)
- The day one is baptized into Christ. (Acts 8.26-39)
- The day Christians observe the Lord’s Supper. (1 Cor. 11.23-26; Acts 20.7)
- The day of judgment when Christ returns. (2 Pet. 3.8-13)
Conclusion: To only celebrate a few days out of a year severely falls short of true appreciation for what the Lord has done!
