AM Scripture Reading: Psalm 118.19-24

This Morning’s Sermon:

Brent T. Willey

No Ordinary Day

Psalm 118.24

Introduction:

  1. Text: “This is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it” (NKJ).
  2. Context: The psalm has a dual nature, but it is extremely Messianic! (Read vs. 21-24)
  3. The “day the Lord has made” is No Ordinary Day!

I. CELEBRATE THE DAY OF SALVATION

  1. Rejoice” in the sense of “celebrating.”
    1. TEV: “This is the day of the Lord’s victory; let us be happy, let us celebrate!”
    2. LXX: “to be glad, exult, rejoice…keep a day of rejoicing”(Mounce).(Rom. 15.10)
  2. “The day”: “day (24 hr.), time, year…a general period of time” (Brown, Driver & Briggs).
    1. It refers to a time of salvation – a “day” of deliverance.
    2. It is an enduring day: “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever” (v. 29).

II. NO ORDINARY DAY(S), INDEED!

  1. The day God sent His Son into the world. (Luke 2.11; John 3.16)
  2. The day Christ died on the cross. (Luke 23.44-47)
  3. The day Christ was resurrected from the dead. (Luke 24.1-8; Matt. 27.52-53; 1 Cor. 15)
  4. The day Christ established His church. (Matt. 16.18; Acts 2.1, 14-16, 41, 47)
  5. The day one is baptized into Christ. (Acts 8.26-39)
  6. The day Christians observe the Lord’s Supper. (1 Cor. 11.23-26; Acts 20.7)
  7. The day of judgment when Christ returns. (2 Pet. 3.8-13)

Conclusion: To only celebrate a few days out of a year severely falls short of true appreciation for what the Lord has done!
