AM Sermon 4/26/15: “One Thing”
AM Scripture Reading: Mark 10.1722
This Morning’s Sermon:

“ONE THING”
Introduction:
- We often use the expression “one thing” for emphasis sake. (E.g., “Just one more thing.” “One thing you should know.”)
- English versions of the Bible translate a variety of phrases into the common idiom, “one thing.” [18x in the NKJV]
- We shall consider five occurrences of this expression…
Joshua 23.14: “Not One Thing Has Failed…”
- Had God ever failed in His promises to Israel? No!!!
- God is the ultimate “Promise Keeper.” (Titus 1.1-3; cf., Num. 23.19; e.g., Gen. 3.15 Gal. 4.4)
Psalm 27.4: “One Thing I Have Desired of the Lord…”
- David longed to “dwell in the house of the Lord…to behold the beauty of the Lord…”
- “Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near…” (Isa. 55.6; cf., Matt. 6.33)
Mark 10.21: “This One Thing You Lack…”
- By the world’s standards the young man seemed to measure up pretty well, but he “lacked” something: commitment!
- What does it mean to follow Jesus? (Luke 9.23; Rom. 12.1-2)
Philippians 3.13: “But One Thing I Do…”
- The “one thing” involves two congruous, simultaneous actions: “forgetting those things which are behind” & “reaching forward to those things which are ahead.”
- Paul’s life in past, present & future terms… (Phil. 3.1-8; cf., 1 Tim. 1.15; 2 Tim. 4.6-8)
2 Peter 3.8: “Do Not Forget This One Thing…”
- God is not subject to time – time is subject to God! (Psa. 90.4)
- Spiritual preparation is always a must! (Amos 4.12; 2 Cor. 6.2)
Conclusion: If there were just “one thing” you needed to do to please God today, would you be willing to do it?
