AM Sermon 4/7/13: When “There Is No God”
AM Scripture Reading: Psalm 10.1-4
This Morning’s Sermon:
Brent T. Willey
When “There Is No God”
Psalm 10.4
Introduction:
- Notice the similarities between Psalm 10.4 & Psalm 14.1:
- Psa. 10.4: “The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.”
- Psa. 14.1: “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good.”
- The Hebrew phrase found in both verses is Ēeyn Ēlohiym, a simple phrase literally meaning: “Not God.”
- The “There Is No God” mentality exists today and society suffers accordingly, and the church will be affected as well!
I. IN THE ABSENCE OF GOD
- Upside-down values: “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” (Isa. 5.20).
- The absence of God issues…
- Religion (Judges 17.6; Gen. 11.4; Rom. 1.18-21)
- Morality (Rom. 1.22-32; 1 Cor. 6.9-10)
- Sanctity of life (Psa. 139.13-16; Rom. 13.1-5)
II. “WHAT CAN THE RIGHTEOUS DO?” – Psalm 11.3
- “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psa. 11.3, 4-7). What has gone wrong? Two things:
- Humanity’s susceptibility to sin. (James 1.12-15)
- Extravagancy, inconsistency & hypocrisy of “religion,” or so-called “Christianity.” (E.g., Matt. 23.1-39; Col. 2.18-23)
- So, what are the righteous to do?
- Keep the faith! (Rom. 3.3-4; cf., Rev. 2.10)
- Keep sharing the gospel of Christ! (Rom. 1.16)
- Keep exposing sin for what it really is! (Eph. 5.11)
- Keep being a godly example to all! (Matt. 5.16)
- Keep looking for growth in the church! (Acts 4.4)
Conclusion: The dissenters will always cry, “There is no God!” – but we shall continue to pursue the narrow path (Matt. 7.13-14).
