“The Hand of God”
Isaiah 59:1
Introduction:
- The expression “Hand of God” is found many times in the Bible.
- “Anthropomorphism” the ascription of human attributes to deity. (1 Pet. 3:12; Ex. 33:23; Matt. 5:35)
- By “Metonymy” the hand of God refers to His activity and power. (1 Pet. 5:6; Eccl. 12:3)
- God’s hand is seen in many marvelous ways.
THE HAND OF GOD IS THE HAND OF CREATION
- The hand of God created the world in which we live.
- How did the world come into existence? (Psa. 8:3-6; 19:1; Heb. 1:10)
- The hand of God created man from the dust. (Gen. 1:26-27; Psa. 119:73)
THE HAND OF GOD IS THE HAND OF SALVATION
- The power of God to save sinful man is proclaimed throughout the Bible. (Gen. 3:1-6; Gen. 3:15; Rom. 1:16)
- God has a desire and the ability to save us. (Rom. 10:21; Matt. 23:37. Psa. 40:2; Isa. 59:1)
THE HAND OF GOD IS THE HAND OF PROVIDENCE
- The hand of God sustains us.
- The hand of providence is a hand of blessing. (Gen. 1:28; Mal. 3:10; Acts 17:28)
- It is the hand of direction. (Hosea 11:3; 1 Thess. 3:11)
Conclusion:
- God also has a hand of retribution reserved for those who will not acknowledge His hand of Creation, accept his hand of Salvation, nor appreciates His hand of Providence.
- “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit” (Luke 23:46)
