“NO OTHER FOUNDATION”

1 Corinthians 3.11

Introduction:

  1. Jesus emphasized spiritual foundations. (Luke 6.47-49)

  2. Paul wrote, “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 3.11).

  3. There are forces eager to destroy the most important foundations in life! (Cf., Psa. 11.3)

  4. Christ is the only foundation that can insure stability!

I. The Word of Christ is Foundational to Truth

  1. Truth” is more than some philosophical notion!

  2. Jesus said, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8.31-32; cf., Rom. 10.17).

  3. Every principle, every detail, every application of truth is founded on the word, “as the truth is in Jesus” (Eph. 4.21)!

II. The Gospel of Christ is Foundational to Salvation

  1. Beware of “perverted” gospels! (Gal. 1.6-9)

  2. Only Christ’s gospel can save us from sin! (Rom. 1.16-17)

  3. What is the foundational truth of the gospel?

    1. It is based on Christ’s D-B-R. (1 Cor. 15.1-4)

    2. It must be believed & obeyed; else damnation will ensue! (Mark 16.15-16; Acts 2.37-38; 2 Thess. 1.7-9)

III. The Church of Christ is His Foundational Body

  1. Men have built their churches throughout the ages, but Jesus built His one church for the ages! (Matt. 16.13-18)
  2. Inasmuch as there is just one saving gospel, there is just one true body of Christ, the church. (Eph. 4.4; 1 Cor. 12.12-13)

  3. We should wear His name! (Rom. 16.16; cf., Acts 4.12)

IV. The Doctrine of Christ is Foundational to Life

  1. It is complete – all sufficient! (2 Tim. 3.16-17; 2 Pet. 1.3)
  2. Doctrine matters! (1 Tim. 4.16; 6.3-5; 2 John 9-11)
  3. Make it “sound doctrine” (1 Tim. 1.10; 2 Tim. 4.3; Titus 2.1)!

Conclusion: “The solid foundation of God stands” (2 Tim. 2.19).
