OUR FAMILY – OUR CHURCH
Introduction:
-
What does the word “family” mean to you?
-
A 34-year research study (1974-2008), conducted by two university professors, revealed six qualities of strong families:
-
Appreciation & Affection for Each Other
-
Valuing Each Other & Demonstrating Commitment
-
Ability to Deal With Crises in a Positive Manner
-
Time Together
-
Good Communication Patterns
-
Spiritual Well-Being
-

-
Not surprisingly, the apostle Paul touches upon these principles in Philippians 2.1-4.
I. FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES
-
“Spiritual Well-Being” was a common underlying principle found among the strong families, which is foundational!
-
Jesus is identified as the only proper foundation for our lives. (1 Cor. 3.11; cf., Matt. 7.24-27)
II. OUR FAMILY – OUR CHURCH
-
Five essential qualities for securing spiritual well-being:
-
Effective Communication (Phil. 2.1-4; cf., Prov. 18.21; Prov. 21.23)
-
Appreciation & Affection (Phil. 2.1; cf., Col. 3.18-21,14)
-
Shared Valued Commitment (Phil. 2.2; cf., Psa. 133.1; 1 Pet. 3.8-11)
-
Positive Conflict Resolution (Phil.2.3;cf.,Matt.7.24-27; Heb. 4.12; James 1.5; Prov. 15.33; James 4.6)
-
Time Together (Phil. 2.4; cf., Matt. 6.33)
-
- We must see the connection between the family & the church!
-
Paul used the two together as an analogy, paralleling Christ’s relationship to the church with a husband’s relationship to his wife, etc. (Eph. 5.22 – 6.9)
-
The church is only as strong as the marriages and the families that make up the local congregation.
-
Conclusion: Our Family–Our Church…both vitally important!
