How To Beat The Devil At His Own Game

1 Peter 5.6-9

Introduction:

  1. Satan has devices! (2 Cor. 2.11; cf., 1 John 2.15-17).

  2. Peter shows us how to Beat the Devil At His Own Game!

I. HUMILITY – Verse 6

  1. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you.”

  2. “Humility” is the first step in beating the devil. (James 4.7-12; c.f., 1 Cor. 10.13; Prov. 11.2; 15.33; 18.12; 29.23)

II. TRANSFERENCE – Verse 7

  1. Casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.”

  2. None of us are strong enough to beat the devil by ourselves! (Rom. 12.1-2; Jer. 10.23; Gal. 6.1-2; James 5.16)

III. VIGILANCE – Verse 8

  1. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls about like roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

  2. “Sober-mindedness” & “watchfulness” represent both offense & defense! (Phil. 4.8; Matt. 26.41; 1 Thess. 5.6-8)

IV. RESISTANCE – Verse 9

  1. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.”

  2. How can we “resist” him? What do you think?

Humility – Transference – Vigilance

Conclusion: A strong brotherhood can beat him at his own game!
