How To Beat The Devil At His Own Game
1 Peter 5.6-9
Introduction:
-
Satan has devices! (2 Cor. 2.11; cf., 1 John 2.15-17).
-
Peter shows us how to Beat the Devil At His Own Game!
I. HUMILITY – Verse 6
-
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you.”
-
“Humility” is the first step in beating the devil. (James 4.7-12; c.f., 1 Cor. 10.13; Prov. 11.2; 15.33; 18.12; 29.23)
II. TRANSFERENCE – Verse 7
-
“Casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.”
-
None of us are strong enough to beat the devil by ourselves! (Rom. 12.1-2; Jer. 10.23; Gal. 6.1-2; James 5.16)
III. VIGILANCE – Verse 8
-
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls about like roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
-
“Sober-mindedness” & “watchfulness” represent both offense & defense! (Phil. 4.8; Matt. 26.41; 1 Thess. 5.6-8)
IV. RESISTANCE – Verse 9
-
“Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.”
-
How can we “resist” him? What do you think?
Humility – Transference – Vigilance
Conclusion: A strong brotherhood can beat him at his own game!
