Brent T. Willey
“My Ways”
Psalm 119.57-60
Introduction:
-
Psalm 119.57-60: “You are my portion, O Lord; I have said that I would keep Your words. I entreated Your favor with my whole heart; be merciful to me according to Your word. I thought about my ways, and turned my feet to Your testimonies. I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments.”
-
What did David do?
I. “I THOUGHT ABOUT MY WAYS”
- Man’s thoughts and ways are not God’s. (Isa. 55.8-9)
- Cain thought differently than God. (Gen. 4)
- Nadab & Abihu thought differently… (Lev. 10)
- Saul thought differently… (1 Sam. 15)
- Naaman thought differently… (2 Kings 5)
- Honest reflection leads to repentance. (2 Cor. 7.9-10)
- The prodigal son “came to himself” (Luke 15.17).
- Peter thought on Jesus’ words and wept. (Mark 14.72)
II. “AND TURNED MY FEET TO YOUR TESTIMONIES”
- This is the result of genuine repentance. (Isa. 55.6-7)
- We have to admit that we’re going the wrong way.
- We don’t have the answers! (Jer. 10.23 & Prov. 14.12)
- God does! (Psa. 119.105; cf., John 5.39; Rom. 10.17)
III. “I MADE HASTE, AND DID NOT DELAY TO KEEP YOUR COMMANDMENTS”
- Urgency causes one to “hasten” to obey! (James 4.14)
- Don’t make the same mistake…
- The rich man made. (Luke 12.16-20)
- Felix made. (Acts 24.25)
- Agrippa made. (Acts 26.28)
Conclusion: God’s way is “the Way” (Acts 9.2; 19.9; etc.)!
