PM Scripture Reading: Psalm 119.57-64

Brent T. Willey

“My Ways”

Psalm 119.57-60

Introduction:

  1. Psalm 119.57-60: “You are my portion, O Lord; I have said that I would keep Your words. I entreated Your favor with my whole heart; be merciful to me according to Your word. I thought about my ways, and turned my feet to Your testimonies. I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments.”

  1. What did David do?

I. “I THOUGHT ABOUT MY WAYS”

  1. Man’s thoughts and ways are not God’s. (Isa. 55.8-9)
    1. Cain thought differently than God. (Gen. 4)
    2. Nadab & Abihu thought differently… (Lev. 10)
    3. Saul thought differently… (1 Sam. 15)
    4. Naaman thought differently… (2 Kings 5)
  2. Honest reflection leads to repentance. (2 Cor. 7.9-10)
    1. The prodigal son “came to himself” (Luke 15.17).
    2. Peter thought on Jesus’ words and wept. (Mark 14.72)

II. “AND TURNED MY FEET TO YOUR TESTIMONIES”

  1. This is the result of genuine repentance. (Isa. 55.6-7)
  2. We have to admit that we’re going the wrong way.
    1. We don’t have the answers! (Jer. 10.23 & Prov. 14.12)
    2. God does! (Psa. 119.105; cf., John 5.39; Rom. 10.17)

III. “I MADE HASTE, AND DID NOT DELAY TO KEEP YOUR COMMANDMENTS”

  1. Urgency causes one to “hasten” to obey! (James 4.14)
  2. Don’t make the same mistake…
    1. The rich man made. (Luke 12.16-20)
    2. Felix made. (Acts 24.25)
    3. Agrippa made. (Acts 26.28)

Conclusion: God’s way is “the Way” (Acts 9.2; 19.9; etc.)!
