THE OVERTAKEN

Galatians 6.1-2

Introduction:

  1. Paul indicates that a brother can be “overtaken in a trespass” to such an extent that his soul is in jeopardy. Consider…
    1. Prolambanō [prolamba/nw]– “overtaken” or “caught in”
    2. Paraptōma [para/ptwma]- “a false step, a blunder; denotes a trespass, a deviation from uprightness” (Vine).
    3. Kataritzō [katariti/zw]- “to mend, to furnish completely; metaphorically- ‘restoration’” (Vine). (E.g., Mark 1.19)
  2. The “spiritual” have a responsibility toward the “overtaken.”

WE SHOULD THINK ABOUT THE OVERTAKEN

  1. We should think about their future; it is not good.
    1. It’s lamentable. (2 Pet. 2.20-22; Heb. 10.26-31)
    2. It’s a timely issue. (2 Cor. 6.1-2)
  2. We should think about their home life. Is it secure?
    1. Is God at the center? (Psa. 127.1)
    2. What about the children? (Prov. 22.6; Eph. 6.4)
  3. We should think about them urgently! (Rev. 2.5)

WHAT WE CAN DO FOR THE OVERTAKEN?

  1. We can pray for them.
    1. They can repent! (Acts 8.22-23; 1 John 1.9)
    2. That they will be moved to godly sorrow. (2 Cor. 7.10)
  2. We can appeal to them.
    1. We should take the first step. (Rom. 12.10)
    2. Compassionate concern. (Text;1Thess.5.14;Jude 22-23)
  3. We can be prepared to receive them. (Luke 15)

Conclusion: The “overtaken” should not be forgotten!
