WEIGHED IN THE BALANCES!

Daniel 5.27

Introduction:

  1. The word Mozendescribes the action of something being weighed: literally, “a pair of scales,” used in the dual sense.
    1. Honest scales” (Lev. 19.36; Prov. 11.1)
    2. God uses honest scales! (Job 31.6; Prov. 16.11)
    3. The Aramaic form of mozen is found in Daniel 5.27.
  2. We too are “weighed in the balances,” and this “balance” has two sides that are necessary for procuring our salvation!

I. THE BALANCE OF SALVATION

  1. Divine Side of Salvation: Grace! (Titus 2.11-14)
    1. Sending His Son, Jesus Christ! (John 3.16; 1 Tim. 1.15)
    2. Offering His blood! (Heb. 9.22; Eph. 1.7)
    3. Supplying the gospel! (Rom. 1.16-17; 1 Cor. 15.1-4)
    4. Establishing the church! (Matt. 16.18; Eph. 5.23)
  1. Human Side of Salvation: Obedience! (Heb. 5.8-9)
    1. Hearing! (Rom. 10.13-17)
    2. Believing! (John 8.24; cf., Rom. 10.10)
    3. Repentance! (Acts 17.30; 2 Pet. 3.9)
    4. Baptism! (Mark 16.15-16; Acts 2.38; 22.16)
    5. Faithfulness! (Rev. 2.10)

II. THE BALANCE OF FAITH

  1. The Divine Side of Faith – Dependability! (1 Cor. 1.9)
    1. To listen to our prayers. (1 Pet. 3.12)
    2. To provide comfort. (2 Cor. 1.3-4)
    3. To deliver us from temptation. (1 Cor. 10.13)
    4. To forgive our sins. (1 John 1.9)
  1. The Human Side of Faith – Commitment! (2 Tim. 1.12)
    1. To offer prayers regularly! (Luke 18.1-8; 1 Thess. 5.17)
    2. To seek God’s comfort & care! (1 Pet. 5.7; Phil. 4.6-7)
    3. To use the escape route provided! (1 Cor. 10.13)
    4. To truly repent of those sins! (1 John 1.9; Acts 8.22)

Conclusion: We are all “weighed in the balances” – how do we measure up in the eyes of God?
