Sermon: Weighed in the Balances
AM Scripture Reading: Daniel 5.22-31
This Morning’s Speaker: Brent T. Willey
“WEIGHED IN THE BALANCES!”
Daniel 5.27
Introduction:
- The word Mozendescribes the action of something being weighed: literally, “a pair of scales,” used in the dual sense.
- “Honest scales” (Lev. 19.36; Prov. 11.1)
- God uses honest scales! (Job 31.6; Prov. 16.11)
- The Aramaic form of mozen is found in Daniel 5.27.
- We too are “weighed in the balances,” and this “balance” has two sides that are necessary for procuring our salvation!
I. THE BALANCE OF SALVATION
- Divine Side of Salvation: Grace! (Titus 2.11-14)
- Sending His Son, Jesus Christ! (John 3.16; 1 Tim. 1.15)
- Offering His blood! (Heb. 9.22; Eph. 1.7)
- Supplying the gospel! (Rom. 1.16-17; 1 Cor. 15.1-4)
- Establishing the church! (Matt. 16.18; Eph. 5.23)
- Human Side of Salvation: Obedience! (Heb. 5.8-9)
- Hearing! (Rom. 10.13-17)
- Believing! (John 8.24; cf., Rom. 10.10)
- Repentance! (Acts 17.30; 2 Pet. 3.9)
- Baptism! (Mark 16.15-16; Acts 2.38; 22.16)
- Faithfulness! (Rev. 2.10)
II. THE BALANCE OF FAITH
- The Divine Side of Faith – Dependability! (1 Cor. 1.9)
- To listen to our prayers. (1 Pet. 3.12)
- To provide comfort. (2 Cor. 1.3-4)
- To deliver us from temptation. (1 Cor. 10.13)
- To forgive our sins. (1 John 1.9)
- The Human Side of Faith – Commitment! (2 Tim. 1.12)
- To offer prayers regularly! (Luke 18.1-8; 1 Thess. 5.17)
- To seek God’s comfort & care! (1 Pet. 5.7; Phil. 4.6-7)
- To use the escape route provided! (1 Cor. 10.13)
- To truly repent of those sins! (1 John 1.9; Acts 8.22)
Conclusion: We are all “weighed in the balances” – how do we measure up in the eyes of God?
