AM Scripture Reading: Matthew 26.17-25
This Morning’s Sermon:
Brent T. Willey
“Lord, Is It I?”
Matthew 26.22
Introduction:
- Try to feel with the apostles in Jesus’ announcement, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me” (v. 21)
- Instead of looking at the others, each disciple was moved to ask, “Lord, is it I?” (v. 22).
- This is a lesson about self-examination. (Cf., 2 Cor. 13.5)
- Consider a few points about self-consideration: “Lord, is it I?”
WORSHIPING WITH AN IMPROPER ATTITUDE
- Worship has to do with my attitude & actions. (John 4.23-24)
- Some challenging aspects of worship…
- The Lord’s Supper? (1 Cor. 11.27-29)
- Singing & Praying? (1 Cor. 14.15)
- Contribution? (1 Cor. 16.1,2; 2 Cor. 9.7)
- Listening to sermons? (Acts 17.11; 1 Thess. 2.13)
MEASURING MYSELF BY THE ACTIONS OF OTHERS
- The “unwise” standard. (2 Cor. 10.12; cf., Gal. 6.4)
- It tends towards false evaluations. (Luke 18.9-14)
- My service is to excel the average. (Matt. 5.20, 47)
- Jesus Christ is the only acceptable standard.
- Am I following His steps? (1 Pet. 2.21)
- Am I imitating Christ? (1 Cor. 11.1)
NEGLECTING MY DUTIES TOWARDS OTHERS
- What is my duty towards others? (Gal. 6.10)
- “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (Gen. 4.9)
- “And who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10.29; vs. 25-37)
- A few more questions are in order…
- Do I talk to others about Jesus? (Prov. 11.30)
- Do I encourage my brethren? (Heb. 3.13; Gal. 6.1-2)
- Do I let my light shine? (Matt. 5.16; Gal. 2.20)
- Do I set proper priorities? (Matt. 6.33)
Conclusion: “Lord, is it I?” is a challenging question, and only the honest heart will ask it and then do what is necessary to please God.
