AM Scripture Reading: Matthew 26.17-25

This Morning’s Sermon:

Brent T. Willey

“Lord, Is It I?”

Matthew 26.22

Introduction:

  1. Try to feel with the apostles in Jesus’ announcement, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me” (v. 21)
  2. Instead of looking at the others, each disciple was moved to ask, “Lord, is it I?” (v. 22).
  3. This is a lesson about self-examination. (Cf., 2 Cor. 13.5)
  4. Consider a few points about self-consideration: “Lord, is it I?”

WORSHIPING WITH AN IMPROPER ATTITUDE

  1. Worship has to do with my attitude & actions. (John 4.23-24)
  2. Some challenging aspects of worship…
    1. The Lord’s Supper? (1 Cor. 11.27-29)
    2. Singing & Praying? (1 Cor. 14.15)
    3. Contribution? (1 Cor. 16.1,2; 2 Cor. 9.7)
    4. Listening to sermons? (Acts 17.11; 1 Thess. 2.13)

MEASURING MYSELF BY THE ACTIONS OF OTHERS

  1. The “unwise” standard. (2 Cor. 10.12; cf., Gal. 6.4)
    1. It tends towards false evaluations. (Luke 18.9-14)
    2. My service is to excel the average. (Matt. 5.20, 47)
  2. Jesus Christ is the only acceptable standard.
    1. Am I following His steps? (1 Pet. 2.21)
    2. Am I imitating Christ? (1 Cor. 11.1)

NEGLECTING MY DUTIES TOWARDS OTHERS

  1. What is my duty towards others? (Gal. 6.10)
    1. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (Gen. 4.9)
    2. “And who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10.29; vs. 25-37)
  2. A few more questions are in order…
    1. Do I talk to others about Jesus? (Prov. 11.30)
    2. Do I encourage my brethren? (Heb. 3.13; Gal. 6.1-2)
    3. Do I let my light shine? (Matt. 5.16; Gal. 2.20)
    4. Do I set proper priorities? (Matt. 6.33)

Conclusion: “Lord, is it I?” is a challenging question, and only the honest heart will ask it and then do what is necessary to please God.
