The Exclusive Savior
John 14.6
Introduction:
- “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me’” (John 14.6).
- Note the definite articles: “the way, the truth, & the life.”
- No less than 18 times, as recorded in the gospel of John alone, Jesus says, )Egw/ ei)mi [egō eimi] – “I am.”
- If His statement is the absolute truth, then Jesus Christ is indeed The Exclusive Savior!
I. JESUS CHRIST, THE WAY
- Christ’s first clause, “I am the way,”is in response to Thomas’ question (v. 5).
- Thomas was seeking direction, so Jesus responded with a personification indicating He was “the way.”
- Earlier Jesus had said, “I am the door…” (John 10.9).
- He is the only “way of salvation” (John 8.24; Acts 4.10-12).
- “The way” is restrictive! (Matt. 7.13-14; cf., Prov. 14.12)
- Only His gospel will save! (Rom. 1.16; Mark 16.15-16; Acts 2.37-38; 8.12; 22.16)
II. JESUS CHRIST, THE TRUTH
-
His second clause, “the truth,”refers to His true character.
-
We want and need to know “the truth.”
-
Nothing is more valuable than “the truth.” (Prov. 23.23)
-
- Jesus Christ embodies “the truth.”
-
He is also designated as “the Word” (John 1.1-2, 14, 17).
-
The “truth” that the Holy Spirit revealed to the apostles was from Christ Himself! (John 16.12-15)
-
III. JESUS CHRIST, THE LIFE
-
The final clause, “the life,”has two important applications:
-
Life physically. (John 1.3; Col. 1.16-17)
-
Life spiritually. (John 1.4; Rom. 6.11; Gal. 2.20)
-
- His resurrection from the dead makes Him the only One qualified to be “the life!” (John 11.25-26)
Conclusion: “He is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5.20).
