This Morning’s Sermon:

The Exclusive Savior

John 14.6

Introduction:

  1. Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me’” (John 14.6).
  2. Note the definite articles: the way, the truth, & the life.”
  3. No less than 18 times, as recorded in the gospel of John alone, Jesus says,  )Egw/ ei)mi [egō eimi] – “I am.”
  4. If His statement is the absolute truth, then Jesus Christ is indeed The Exclusive Savior!

I. JESUS CHRIST, THE WAY

  1. Christ’s first clause, “I am the way,”is in response to Thomas’ question (v. 5).
    1. Thomas was seeking direction, so Jesus responded with a personification indicating He was “the way.”
    2. Earlier Jesus had said, “I am the door…” (John 10.9).
  2.  He is the only “way of salvation” (John 8.24; Acts 4.10-12).
    1. The way” is restrictive! (Matt. 7.13-14; cf., Prov. 14.12)
    2. Only His gospel will save! (Rom. 1.16; Mark 16.15-16; Acts 2.37-38; 8.12; 22.16)

II. JESUS CHRIST, THE TRUTH

  1. His second clause, “the truth,”refers to His true character.

    1. We want and need to know “the truth.”

    2. Nothing is more valuable than “the truth.” (Prov. 23.23)

  2. Jesus Christ embodies “the truth.”
    1. He is also designated as “the Word” (John 1.1-2, 14, 17).

    2. The “truth” that the Holy Spirit revealed to the apostles was from Christ Himself! (John 16.12-15)

III. JESUS CHRIST, THE LIFE

  1. The final clause, “the life,”has two important applications:

    1. Life physically. (John 1.3; Col. 1.16-17)

    2. Life spiritually. (John 1.4; Rom. 6.11; Gal. 2.20)

  2. His resurrection from the dead makes Him the only One qualified to be “the life!” (John 11.25-26)

Conclusion: “He is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5.20).
