The Communication Formula
James 1.19-20
Introduction:
- Better communication is something we as Christians should all desire. (Prov. 18.21; Matt. 12.37; James 3.1-12)
- James offers an amazing communication formula: “So then, my beloved brethren; let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God” (James 1.19-20).
- James employs two words commonly used for measuring speed.
- “Swift to hear” [Tachùs: “swift, prompt or ready” (1x).]
- “Slow to speak…slow to wrath” [Brachùs: “metaphoric, dull, inactive in mind” (3x; cf., Luke 24.25).]
- These three instructions are measured responses…
“SWIFT TO HEAR”
- “Listen!” Try to understand what the other is saying before making a response or even forming an opinion.
- Good listening skills demonstrate wisdom.
- Elihu: the voice of reason (Job 33.1, 31-33; 34.16)
- Prov. 7.24: “Now therefore, listen to me, my children; pay attention to the words of my mouth.”
“SLOW TO SPEAK”
- “Process!” Even if a reply is needed, take your time – think before engaging or speaking. What a contrast!
- Again, wisdom carefully measures verbal responses…
- Proverbial wisdom (Prov. 29.20; cf., 14.33; 12.23; 29.11)
- Nehemiah prayed before answering the king. (Neh. 2.4-6)
“SLOW TO WRATH”
- “Patience!” Anger usually breaks down communication and severely jeopardizes relationships.
- Remember, “the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God” (James 1.20 – nasb).
- More proverbial wisdom. (Prov. 14.29; 15.18; 16.32)
- Resolve anger! (Eph. 4.26) [Orgízō: “exasperated”]
Conclusion: This is a formula we must all put into practice.
