PM Sermon 2/3/13: Christian Occupations

CHRISTIAN OCCUPATIONS

Introduction:

  1. When working a job, one must fill the job description.
  2. Paul wants to make sure Timothy does the required work.
  3. We should apply the merits of these vocations in our lives as well!

I. A SOLDIER (v. 3-4)

  1. Soldiers endure hardship. (1 Tim. 1:18-20; 2 Tim. 4:5)
  2. No soldier is entangled in life. (Rom. 6:4-6; 7:15-20; 12:1-2; Eph. 6:10-17)
  3. Soldiers aim to please their commander.
    1. They complete the mission in obedience. (2 Cor. 10:3-5)
    2. They wish to be promoted. (Matt. 25:21)
  4. Soldiers are disciplined.

II. AN ATHLETE (v. 5)

  1. Athletes compete to win. (1 Cor. 9:24-27)
  2. They compete according to the rules.
    1. The rules are clearly defined. (2 Tim. 3:15-17; 2 Tim. 2:15-17; 2 Pet. 1:5-8, 10)
    2. Cheaters are disqualified. (1 Cor. 9:27)
  3. Athletes have integrity.

III. A FARMER (v. 6)

  1. Farmers work hard for a crop. (1 Cor. 9:19, 23; Luke 10:2)
  2. The farmer will reap what he sows.
    1. We will reap from our deeds. (2 Cor. 5:9-10)
    2. We must sow God’s crop. (Mark 16:15-16; 2 Tim. 2:15; Isa. 55:9-11)
  3. Farmers are patient. (James 5:7-8)

Conclusion: Will we fit the job description?
