CHRISTIAN OCCUPATIONS
Introduction:
-
When working a job, one must fill the job description.
-
Paul wants to make sure Timothy does the required work.
-
We should apply the merits of these vocations in our lives as well!
I. A SOLDIER (v. 3-4)
-
Soldiers endure hardship. (1 Tim. 1:18-20; 2 Tim. 4:5)

No soldier is entangled in life. (Rom. 6:4-6; 7:15-20; 12:1-2; Eph. 6:10-17)
-
Soldiers aim to please their commander.

They complete the mission in obedience. (2 Cor. 10:3-5)
-
They wish to be promoted. (Matt. 25:21)

Soldiers are disciplined.
II. AN ATHLETE (v. 5)

Athletes compete to win. (1 Cor. 9:24-27)

They compete according to the rules.

The rules are clearly defined. (2 Tim. 3:15-17; 2 Tim. 2:15-17; 2 Pet. 1:5-8, 10)

Cheaters are disqualified. (1 Cor. 9:27)

Athletes have integrity.
III. A FARMER (v. 6)

Farmers work hard for a crop. (1 Cor. 9:19, 23; Luke 10:2)

The farmer will reap what he sows.

We will reap from our deeds. (2 Cor. 5:9-10)

We must sow God’s crop. (Mark 16:15-16; 2 Tim. 2:15; Isa. 55:9-11)

Farmers are patient. (James 5:7-8)
Conclusion: Will we fit the job description?
