Who Is Your Father?
John 8.37-47
Introduction:
- Jesus confronts the Jews with the issue of their true “father.”
- Who is your father? More importantly, are we doing the deeds of our Father?
THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT – Genesis 12
- The covenant (Gen. 12.1-3; cf., Gen. 17.1-8; 22.15-19)
- Abraham’s descendants obtained the land. (Exod. 6.2-8; cf., Deut. 1.6-8; Josh. 1.1-6; Acts 7.2-5, 44-46; Psa. 105.7-13, 42-45; Josh. 23.15)
- They became a great nation. (Gen. 46.3; cf., Exod. 1.7; Deut. 1.8-11; Heb. 11.11-12; Isa. 10.22; 1 Chron. 17.21)
- Eventually “all families” (or nations) will be blessed through Abraham’s “seed.” (Gen. 12.1-3; 17.1-8; 22.18)
- The character of Abraham
- By faith Abraham leaves the Ur of the Chaldeans and receives a promise from God. (Gen. 11.31; 15.1-6)
- He “believed” and it was reckoned to him as “righteousness.” (Gen. 15.6)
HEIRS OF ABRAHAM THROUGH CHRIST – Galatians 3
- Those of faith are the sons of Abraham. (Gal. 3.6-7)
- Righteousness comes by faith, not the “Law.” (Gal. 3.21; cf., Rom. 4.9-10)
- Christ redeemed us from the Law’s curse. (Gal. 3.13-14)
- All are under sin, but God’s promises come to those who believe in Christ. (Gal. 3.22)
- Those baptized into Christ are clothes with Him. (Gal. 3.27)
- The promised seed is Christ! (Gal. 3.16)
SOME FINAL OBSERVATIONS…
- Only Christ can set us free! (Gal. 5.1; John 8.32)
- In baptism we contact Christ’s blood. (Rom. 6.3-4)
- The Jews failed to live by faith…they tried to live by the works of the Law, but failed miserably! What about us?
Conclusion: How are you living? Does your life show who your true spiritual father is?
