LANGUAGES AMONG US

Nehemiah 13.23-27

Introduction:

  1. Nehemiah discovered Jews who had long since married women of surrounding nations: Ashdod (Philistia), Ammon & Moab.
  2. Polygamous Jews were marrying both Judean & pagan women, and some of the siblings of these unions could not understand one another. They should have learned from Solomon (v. 26).
  3. Let’s consider some languages among us…

THE LANGUAGE OF GOD

  1. The true language of God is revealed in His inspired Word. (2 Tim. 3.16; cf., 1 Cor. 2.9-13; 2 Pet. 1.19-21)
  2. We are to use the “utterances of God…that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ…” (1 Pet. 4.11).

THE LANGUAGE OF ASHDOD

  1. The phrase, “language of Ashdod,” has come to represent a type of communication that fails to represent biblical truth.
  2. Some non-biblical language: “original sin” (Ezek.18.20); “once saved, always saved” (1 Cor. 10.12); “infant baptism” (Acts 8.36-37); “sprinkling” for baptism (Col. 2.12); “Father” (Matt. 2.39); “Pastor” (Eph. 4.11); Pope, nuns, diocese, etc.

THE LANGUAGE OF THE REDEEMED

  1. A language that reverences God.(Psa. 89.7;111.9; Heb.12.28)
  2. A language that praises God with thankfulness. (Heb. 13.15)
  3. A language that prays to God fervently. (1 Thess. 5.17)
  4. A language that shares God’s truth. (Psa. 66.16; John 1.46)

Conclusion: What language are we speaking & teaching our children?
