This Morning’s Sermon:

SALVATION IS A MARATHON

Introduction:

  1. A marathon race, like salvation through Jesus Christ is open to everyone. (Mark 9.23)
  2. Running a marathon takes commitment, discipline, overcoming adversity, and is a long term project. (1 Cor. 9.24-27)
  3. Let us look at the specifics:

I. SALVATION IS A LONG RANGE PROJECT:

  1. Salvation like running a race are not a sprint (Eccl. 9.11)
  2. Both require proper preparation (Matt. 13.1-9)

II. SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND SALVATION REQUIRES DISCIPLINE:

  1. How is discipline accomplished (2 Tim. 2.5)
  2. To a certain extent, we must wear blinders (Heb. 12.1-2)

III. ONLY FAITH CAN OVERCOME ADVERSITY:

  1. Know this first: adversity will find us! (1Cor. 10.12-13; Luke. 4.1-2; Isa. 40.31)
  2. Look at biblical examples of faith overcoming adversity. (Heb.10.32-36)

IV. THE PRIZE IS FOR THOSE WHO FINISH THE RACE:

  1. We must be strong, committed, and faithful (Matt. 7.13-14; 1 Tim. 4.7-8; 2 Tim. 4.6-8)
  2. We must have our eyes fixed on the finish line! (Acts 26.29)

V. THIS RACE IS OPEN TO ALL!

  1. The hurdles are clearly marked and the way over them is mapped out (Titus 2.11-12)
  2. Some decide not to enter the race (Luke 8.5, 11-12)
  3. Some enter the race but quit shortly thereafter! (Luke 8.6-7; Mark.10.25)
  4. Some are only looking for the easy way (Luke. 13.24)

Conclusion: The race for spiritual salvation is a race that none of us can afford to lose! Discipline your minds to insure that you finish the race and receive the final prize- the crown of life!
