DEFINE THE RELATIONSHIP

Introduction:

  1. There is nothing more important than “relationships,” but they need to be well defined.

  2. When Jesus posed the question, “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say?” (Luke 6.46), He was defining the relationship between Himself & His disciples.

  3. God’s Word defines what our relationship with Christ is to be…

I. DEFINING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST

  1. Jesus Christ is our Savior

    1. His name, Jesus, means “salvation” (Matt. 1.21).

    2. Through the washing of regeneration” (Titus 3.4-7).

  2. Jesus Christ is our Sacrifice

    1. He gave Himself for us! (Eph. 5.2)

    2. He who knew no sin” became “sin for us” (2 Cor. 5.21).

  3. Jesus Christ is our Advocate

    1. He is our “advocate with the Father” (1 John 2.1).

    2. As such, He mediates & intercedes for us. (1 Tim. 2.5; Rom. 8.34; Heb. 7.25)

  4. Jesus Christ is our Lord, Master & King

    1. He is “Lord of lords and King of kings” (Rev. 17.14).

    2. Thomas confessed, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20.28).

II. DEFINING MOMENTS IN THIS RELATIONSHIP

  1. Circumstances that test our relationship with Christ.

    1. Marriage & Family (Matt. 10.34-37)

    2. Friends (1 Cor. 15.33)

    3. Wealth (Matt. 19.16-22, 29)

    4. Recreation (Eccl. 2.1-3, tev)

  2. Christians are to live over the circumstances, not under them.

    1. It’s a matter of priorities. (Matt. 6.33)

    2. It’s doing what He says. (Luke 6.46; Matt. 7.21-23)

    3. It’s striving for spiritual excellence. (Phil. 1.9-11)

  3. The defining statement of Jesus: “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14.15).

Conclusion: There is nothing more important than being in a right relationship with Christ. Make Him your Lord, Master & King!
