AM Scripture Reading: Psalm 127.1-5
This Morning’s Sermon:
Brent T. Willey
MOMS & DADS
(Being Good Parents)
Introduction:
- Think about the extent of Paul’s statement in 2 Tim. 3.16-17.
- Can you think of a “work” any more serious than guiding the steps of our children? Parenting is a momentous task!
- “Behold, children are a gift…” (Psa. 127.3 – nasb).
- What is God’s estimation of good parents?
GOOD PARENTS STRIVE FOR GODLINESS!
- Good parents create a godly atmosphere. (Gen. 18.19)
- Good parents are themselves obedient to God. (Josh. 24.15)
- Good parents know the value of example. (Matt. 5.16)
- Good parents exhibit godly priorities. (Matt. 6.33)
GOOD PARENTS PROVIDE PROPER TRAINING!
- Good parents respect the roles of both “father & mother.”
- Good fathers are spiritual leaders. (Eph. 6.4)
- Good mothers provide instruction. (2 Tim. 1.5; 3.14-15)
- Good fathers & mothers work together!
- Good parents implement “whole” training.
- Instruction about life… (2 Pet. 1.3)
- Instruction about spiritual matters… (Prov. 22.6; Eph. 6.4)
- Instruction by way of discipline… (Heb. 12.9; Prov. 23.13)
GOOD PARENTS FURNISH BALANCED ATTENTION!
- Good parents seek their children’s well being with time.
- A “gift” for a short time. (Psa. 127.3; James 4.14)
- In gaining the “whole world” more than just one soul is lost! (Mark 8.36) How many children are orphans with living parents at home?
- Love “does not seek its own” (1 Cor.13.5).
- Good parents take an active role in spiritual development!
- Spiritual neglect is the curse of most children! Neglect is as ominous as Molech.
- Who will teach them about the “Creator” (Eccl. 12.1)?
Conclusion: How much has our heavenly Father displayed His love?
