The Preferred Citizenship
Philippians 3.20
Introduction:
- Paul knew the value of being a Roman citizen (Acts 16.35-39), but would his citizenship fail him (2 Tim. 2.9; 4.6)?
- More than anything, Paul longed for “the goal of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3.12-13), which is why he said in Phil. 3.20: “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
- As Christians, we have a Preferred Citizenship…
I. THE PHILIPPIANS WERE PROUD CITIZENS
- History: In 168 BC Macedonia, with the city of Philippi, became a Roman territory, a Province in 146 BC.
- Octavian & Antony defeat Brutus & Cassius in 42 BC.
- Octavian then defeats Antony & Cleopatra in 31 BC.
- He grants special privileges to Philippi.
- Philippian cities were known for their national pride!
II. PAUL EMPHASIZES A “HEAVENLY CITIZENSHIP”
- Paul encourages the Philippians, “join in following my example…” (Phil. 3.17).
- Paul’s use of the word politeuma, “citizenship” – literally, “our life as a citizen.” They appreciated citizenship!
III. CHRISTIANS: CITIZENS OF A HEAVENLY KINGDOM
- This was certainly taught by Jesus. (John 18.36)
- Our citizenship is heavenly!
- How are you registered? (Heb. 12.22-23)
- Consider the multiple spiritual benefits. (Eph. 1.3)
Conclusion: Are you a rightful citizen in Christ’s kingdom?
