PM Scripture Reading: Genesis 39.1-10              Brent T. Willey

“ADD TO YOUR FAITH…VIRTUE”

2 Peter 1.5-11

(Part Two)

Introduction:

  1. What is “virtue”? [Arete: originally denoted manliness, courage, fortitude & valor, but with moral implications.]
  2. It is listed as the first attribute to be “added” to our faith!
  3. What Is Virtue?

  I. IT IS COURAGE IN THE FACE OF THE ENEMY!

  1. From where does it come? (Deut. 31.6; Heb. 11.32-35)
    1. “Only a little boy David…” (1 Sam. 17)
    2. Daniel in the lion’s den. (Dan. 6)
    3. Boldness of the early disciples. (Acts 4-5)
  2. Phil. 4.13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

II. IT DEVELOPS ETHICAL & MORAL CHARACTER!

  1. How important is reputation? (E.g., Acts 6.3; 10.22)
  2. Godly virtue protects two important reputations:
    1. Personal reputation! (Eccl. 7.1)
    2. Christ’s name! (2 Tim. 2.19; 1 Pet. 4.14-16)

III. IT EXAMINES ALL OF LIFE’S CIRCUMSTANCES!

  1. “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise” (Eph. 5.15 – esv).
    1. Joseph looked to God – not sinful opportunity!
    2. “The point of no return.”
  2. Careful walking involves incorporating God’s Word, and then petitioning Him in prayer. (1 Thess. 5.17)

Conclusion: Virtue demands courage, moral character & vigilance!
