PM Sermon 12/9/07: Add to Your Faith Virtue
PM Scripture Reading: Genesis 39.1-10 Brent T. Willey
“ADD TO YOUR FAITH…VIRTUE”
2 Peter 1.5-11
(Part Two)
Introduction:
- What is “virtue”? [Arete: originally denoted manliness, courage, fortitude & valor, but with moral implications.]
- It is listed as the first attribute to be “added” to our faith!
- What Is Virtue?
I. IT IS COURAGE IN THE FACE OF THE ENEMY!
- From where does it come? (Deut. 31.6; Heb. 11.32-35)
- “Only a little boy David…” (1 Sam. 17)
- Daniel in the lion’s den. (Dan. 6)
- Boldness of the early disciples. (Acts 4-5)
- Phil. 4.13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
II. IT DEVELOPS ETHICAL & MORAL CHARACTER!
- How important is reputation? (E.g., Acts 6.3; 10.22)
- Godly virtue protects two important reputations:
- Personal reputation! (Eccl. 7.1)
- Christ’s name! (2 Tim. 2.19; 1 Pet. 4.14-16)
III. IT EXAMINES ALL OF LIFE’S CIRCUMSTANCES!
- “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise” (Eph. 5.15 – esv).
- Joseph looked to God – not sinful opportunity!
- “The point of no return.”
- Careful walking involves incorporating God’s Word, and then petitioning Him in prayer. (1 Thess. 5.17)
Conclusion: Virtue demands courage, moral character & vigilance!
