“ADD TO YOUR FAITH…GODLINESS!”
2 Peter 1.5-11
(Part Six)
Introduction:
- What is “godliness?”
- Eusebeia: eu [“well”] & sebomai [“to worship”] – the radical idea is “worship rightly directed” (Vincent).
- In verse 6 its main meaning seems to be devotion to or complete commitment to God – “true religious life” (tev).
- “Godliness” is more than just a state of mind – it is a way of life that honors God in action and attitude!
I.GODLINESS BEGINS WITH EMPTYING SELF!
- The thoughts of the godly are well established. (Prov. 16.3)
-
Inner thoughts define the person! (Prov. 23.7)
-
Put on the mind of Christ! (Phil. 2.5; 4.8)
- Denying self results in sacrificial commitment.
-
It is how we take up “our cross daily.” (Luke 9.23)
-
It is necessary for “transformation.” (Rom. 12.1-2)
II.GODLINESS CONTINUES IN LIFELONG DEVOTION!
-
From start to finish! (Heb. 3.14)
-
Satan wants us to “lose heart” – give up! (Gal. 6.9)
-
“We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14.21-22).
-
It is equally important that we finish the race! (Acts 20.24)
-
Do not “run in vain” (Phil. 2.16)!
-
Paul’s confidence can be our confidence! (2 Tim. 4.6-8)
Conclusion: “Godliness is profitable for all things” (1 Tim. 4.7-8).
