THELEGACY OF THETEN COMMANDMENTSANDBEYOND
Part One
Introduction:
-
The lasting influence of the “Ten Commandments” is quite remarkable, but well beyond coincidence.
-
The 10 Commandment Law has been grossly misunderstood, as well as misapplied. Let’s dispel the confusion…
I. GOD’S COVENANT WITH ISRAEL
-
God made this covenant with Israel (the Hebrews) after their deliverance from Egyptian bondage. (Exod. 19.1-8)
-
The “Ten Commandments” on Mount Sinai. (Exod. 20.1-17)
-
Moses received it directly from God! (Exod. 20.22-23)
-
Israel’s immediate idolatry… (Exod. 32.1-35)
-
The new tablets… (Exod. 34.1-35)
-
- Deuteronomy contains the second listing. (Deut. 5.1-22)
-
Deuteromian: “2nd law”} Deuteros = 2nd; Nomos = law
-
Hebrew title: Haddebarim = “The Words” (Deut. 1.1)
-
Mishneh Hattorah: “Repetition of the Law” (Deut. 17.18)
-
- The 10 Commandment Law was considered as a part of God’s covenant with Israel. (Deut. 4.13-14; cf., Heb. 9.4)
II. THE TEN COMMANDMENT LAW – THEN & NOW
-
It highlighted Israel’s relationship with God & fellow man. (Cf., Matt. 22.35-40)
-
Commandments 1-4: Man’s relationship with God
-
Commandments 5-10: Man’s relationship with man
-
- It served as the basis of God’s covenant with Israel, but they were not the entire law. (Exod. 21-31; Deut. 6.30)
- It was a covenant made with Israel only. (Deut. 5.1-3)
-
A temporary covenant. (Jer. 31.31-34; cf., Heb. 8.7-13)
-
Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law. (Matt. 5.17)
-
Called the “ministry of death” (2 Cor. 3.6-16)
-
A “tutor” that brought the Jews to Christ. (Gal. 3.19-29)
-
Abolished by Jesus’ sacrifice – uniting Jew & Gentile by the gospel of Christ! (Eph. 2.11-18; Col. 2.11-17)
-
- We are not under the 10 Commandment Law today!
Conclusion: “What purpose then does the Law serve?” (Gal. 3.19)

THELEGACYOF THETENCOMMANDMENTSANDBEYOND
Part Two
Introduction:
-
Review: What was the purpose of the 10 Commandment Law?
-
God’s covenant with Israel. (Exod. 19.5-6; Deut. 4.13-14)
-
It defined Israel’s two-fold relationship: God & man.
-
As a “tutor,” it brought the Jews to Christ. (Gal. 3.19-25)
-
-
The “gospel” is for all (Rom. 1.16-17) – reconciling both Jew and Gentile to God through Jesus Christ! (Cf., Eph. 2.11-16)
I. A BETTER COVENANT WITH BETTER PROMISES
-
In Christ we have many “better” blessings:
-
“Better covenant…better promises” (Heb. 8.6)
-
“Better hope” (Heb. 7.1)
-
“Better sacrifices” (Heb. 9.23)
-
“Better and an enduring possession…” (Heb. 10.34)
-
- The problem was not with God’s Law. (Heb. 8.7-13)
II. BEYOND THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
-
What does the “doctrine of Christ” teach? (Cf., 1 Tim. 4.6)
-
No other gods? (Exod. 20.3 Matt. 4.10; 1 John 2.15)
-
No idols? (Exod. 20.4-5 2 Cor. 8.4; 1 Tim. 6.10)
-
No abusing God’s name? (Exod. 20.7 James 5.12)
-
Observing a day? (Exod. 20.8 Col. 2.16; Heb. 10.25)
-
Honoring parents? (Exod. 20.12 Eph. 6.1-3)
-
No murder? (Exod. 20.13 Matt. 5.21-24; Gal. 5.21)
-
No adultery? (Exod. 20.14 Matt. 5.27-30; Gal. 5.19)
-
No stealing? (Exod. 20.15 Eph. 4.28; 2 Thess. 3.10)
-
No lying? (Exod. 20.16 Eph. 4.25; Rev. 21.8)
- No coveting? (Exod. 20.17 1 Cor. 6.9-11)
-
- Is this the entirety of Christ’s doctrine? No! (1 Tim. 1.5-11)
Conclusion: Liberty in Christ does not give us license to sin!!!
