PM Scripture Reading: Zephaniah 3.1-5 This Evening’s Sermon: Brent T. Willey Our Unfailing God Zephaniah 3.5 Introduction: Zephaniah warns the southern kingdom of Judah with fiery images and looming judgment (Zeph. 1.1-3). Yet, he also gives a message calling for repentance, leading to forgiveness (2.1-3). He concludes, “The Lord is righteous in her midst, he will do no unrighteousness. Every morning He brings His justice to light; He never fails, but the unjust knows no shame” (3.5). GOD’S UNFAILING RIGHTEOUSNESS & JUSTICE His Righteousness: “The Lord is righteous within her…” (Verse 5; cf., Psa. 92.15; Hosea 14.9) Judgment “begins with […]

Righteousness, But Not Self-Righteous!

The gospel writer, Luke, informs us that Jesus “spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others” (Luke 18.9). Most of us are familiar with the parable that exposes arrogant, self-righteous people and their religious hypocrisy. It’s good to know the truth. It’s good to stand for what is right according to God’s word. But it isn’t good to be self-righteous. Jesus illustrated this point in His parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18.9-14). The Pharisee fasted twice weekly, whereas Jews customarily fasted one day each week. He tithed all […]

PM Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 28.15-20 Brent T. Willey LESSONS FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE Introduction: If the dead could speak to us, what would they say? What would they say about the world beyond the grave? [I think about the comments made by people regarding those who have died: “They’re looking down on us right now.” (Eccl. 9.10)] What type of life would the departed urge me to live? [This is the more relevant question, and we have some biblical insight to this curious matter, especially when we consider the teaching of Jesus.] One thing is certain, we must be […]

Watch the video of this sermon PM Scripture Reading: The 15th Psalm This Evening’s Sermon: Brent T. Willey “Hold The Hill!” Psalm 15.1  Introduction: The story is told of a young officer during World War I who was told to hold a small hill at all costs. He did so, which was the key to the overall victory! We have a position to hold (Matt. 28.18-20; John 12.48; cf., Rom. 10.17), and it is our duty to defend the pure gospel of Christ and lead others to it (Rom. 1.16; Acts 20.27; 1 Pet. 4.11). We must not “lose heart” […]

AM Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 4.1-5 This Morning’s Sermon:   Brent T. Willey FIXING THE WRONG & DOING THE RIGHT 2 Timothy 4.2 Introduction: God’s “word” is our counseling manual when it comes to all the significant relationships we have in life, beginning with our relationship with God! Paul appealed to Timothy in 2 Tim. 4.2: “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction” (NAU). Let’s take a close look at Paul’s statement… EXAMINING THE TEXT – 2 Timothy 4.2 The Charge:“Preach the word!” Sola Scriptura vs. Prima Scriptura […]

PM Scripture Reading: Romans 10.1-3 Brent T. Willey Misdirected Zeal! Introduction: The apostle Paul exposed Israel’s misdirected zeal when he wrote, “For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge” (Rom. 10.2; read vs. 1-3). This is no less of a problem in today’s religious world! The Problem of Ignorance “For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness…” Agnoountes, is from agnoeō, “to be ignorant, not to know,” which is counter to gnōsis, primarily a seeking to know, and enquiry, investigation” (Vine). The same form is used in Acts 17.23: “the One whom […]

PM Scripture Reading: Joshua 7:3-5 David M. Fiddament THE GREATER DEFEAT Introduction: After the mighty victory at Jericho, I can only imagine Joshua’s confusion from the defeat at the battle of Ai. Israel was defeated by more than the people of Ai; they were defeated by sin. I. SIN CAUSES PROBLEMS Sin gets people killed. (v. 4-5; Rom. 6:23) Sin keeps people from their home. (Rom. 3:23) Sin is not worth it. (v. 21; Gal. 6:7-8) Sin makes God turn His back. (v. 12; Rom. 1:32) II. GOD SEES EVERYTHING Achan hid his sin. (v. 21) He thought no one […]

James wrote to Christians this following warning: “Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin” (James 4.17). When children know they are in trouble, they think they did something wrong, otherwise why the problem? They may ask, “What did I do wrong?” But the answer often surprises them when they hear, “You failed to do what you should have done.”  In religious parlance this is called a “sin of omission.” (Remember, a “sin of commission” is when you do something that you are not supposed to do.) In the parable […]

AM Scripture Reading: Psalm 119.57-60 Brent T. Willey Three Timeless Questions Introduction: Whenever brother Gus Nichols (1892-1975) did any sort of counseling, he began the first session with three questions: “Do you really want to do what is right?” “Are you ready for the Bible to tell you what is right?” “Are you willing to do what the Bible says right now?” For brother Nichols, a “no” answer ended the sessions. These three questions are extremely valid. I. DOING WHAT IS RIGHT “Do you really want to do what is right?” (Col. 3.17) God gives us the opportunity to do […]
